The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Asiedu Nketiah boycotted the 39th anniversary of the June 4 uprising ceremony because his name was not on the program.

According to a communications member of the Greater Accra region branch of the NDC, Ernest Kwame, Asiedu Nketiah refused to attend the ceremony because of the omission.

The founder of the party, Jerry Rawlings and senior party officials on Monday converged on the Madina social welfare school park to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the June 4 celebration.

Ernest Kwame who spoke to Citi News said the General Secretary was very disappointed when he found out his name was not on the list.

“The party has a big family; I don’t think all those who call themselves big men can appear on the dignitaries list, looking at his face he seemed very disappointed that his name was not on the list of dignitaries, so he looked very angry,” he said.

The founder of NDC, former president Jerry John Rawlings noted that the party was on the path to losing the 2020 elections.

According to him, the party has not learnt from the mistakes which caused the defeat in the 2016 elections.

The National vice chairperson for the party, Anita Desooso called on the founder to pardon the party executives who had wronged him. According to her, the founder is the father of the party and must be seen as such.

About June 4 uprising

Flt Lt Rawlings led a group of junior officers and men of the Ghana Armed Forces in a revolt against the then Supreme Military Council (SMC II) regime led by General F.K. Akuffo.

The move was said to have been motivated by a desire to stem the scourge of corruption that had engulfed the country at all levels leading to a virtual breakdown of the economy.

Three months later the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) led by Rawlings handed over power to an elected government.
